Overview

They say to not practice until you get it right, but to practice until you can’t get it wrong. Martial arts is a sport filled with ups and downs, but determination goes a long way. This is the story of how my failure pushed me further than I thought I could ever possibly go.

The Process

Making this video was new territory for me. I’ve done some editing in the past, but never a fully fledge video like this one. It was a bit of a learning curve, but I actually ended up really enjoying the process. It was really interesting learning about all the different possibilities within video editing software and I’d definitely like to do this more in the future.

As far as my process for making the video, it was a lot of digging into the past. This story is very clear in my head, so I just needed to get the words onto the paper. All of these pictures were quite a few years ago, however, with some of them being as old as 2008. It was really fun getting to see all of my old pictures, even though not all of them ended up in the video.

The overall purpose for choosing this story–apart from it just being an important story for me–is that the whole cinematic idea of “never give up and you can accomplish anything” isn’t necessarily false. As I talk about in this story, I wanted to give up so many times when I was training, but because I pushed myself, I ended up going further than I ever thought I could. I want to be able to encourage others to not give up on themselves, because you never know what’s waiting for if you just keep going.
